The Academy Awards have come to define the most outstanding work in motion pictures. Over its sev- enty five year long history, the ceremony has grown from a local dinner honoring a selected number of guests to a global event witnessed by hundreds of millions of people throughout the world. It truly de- fines the meaning of popular culture.

Seven Decades of the Academy Awards: A Hollywood History is a class that traces the history of the awards, from its formative years to this year’s ceremony. We will explore a number of key factors in trying to understand how and why the awards have achieved their current status.
